Third successive goalless draw for Floriana

Floriana were held in a third consecutive goalless draw, this time by Hamrun Spartans, in a match from the BOV Premier League Top Six final round at the National Stadium on Saturday. This result means that Hibernians now need just one point from the remaining two matches to be crowned champions.

Hamrun, on the other hand, had an excellent opportunity to notch the winner when they were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time but the penalty was saved by the Floriana goalkeeper. The Spartans now lie one point ahead of Birkirkara in the battle for third place. The Stripes have a game against Hibernians in hand with Hamrun and Birkirkara facing each other in a direct clash next weekend.

Predrag Djordjevic missed two good chances for Hamrun, first hitting wide on 18 minutes from an ideal position inside the area following a cross by Corbalan and then on 24 minutes with a weak header off a cross by Ailton Soares which was saved by Kitanov. Seven minutes from the end of the first half, a Matteo Fedele header off a cross by Corbalan.

On 70 minutes, Faissal El Bakhtaoui had a first time effort blocked by by Kitanov but on 78 minutes, substitute Aleandro Garzia missed the target with a close-range header and three minutes later, a Jan Busuttil effort from outside the area was blocked by Bonello.

Five minutes in added time, Hamrun were awarded a penalty when Darko Gojkovic was brought down by Matias Garcia but Franklin Sasere’s penalty was neutralised by Kitanov.
