Hibernians turn defeat into victory to claim thirteenth championship

Hibernians were declared champions after they came from behind to beat Birkirkara 2-1 in a match from the BOV Premier League Top Six final round at the National Stadium on Sunday. With one match to go, the Paolites move six points clear of runners-up Floriana.

Birkirkara, on the other hand, remain fourth, one point behind Hamrun and the direct clash between the two next weekend should determine which team takes third place with Gzira United having an outside chance in case of two wins in their last two matches.

The Stripes managed to take the lead on the 20th minute when Federico Falcone hit low past goalkeeper Ibrahim Kone from the edge of the area.

Hibs equalised eight minutes later when Ali Diakite sent Thaylor Aldama through on the right and the latter served Jurgen Degabriele who tapped the ball home from close range.

On the 71st minute, the Paolites forged ahead when off a short corner by Izquier, Degabriele delivered a cross from the right, Almeida headed the ball in the direction of Dunstan Vella who headed the ball past Sylla.

Four minutes in added time, Hibs sealed the issue with a third goal thanks to Sergio Raphael dos Anjos who, with goalkeeper Amara Sylla still in midfield in the Stripes’ attempt to notch a late equaliser, advanced all alone and deposited the ball inside the empty net.
