Women’s League champions Birkirkara became the first Maltese team to register a win in the UEFA Women’s Champions League as they came from behind to defeat Glentoran FC of Northern Ireland 2-1 in the match for third place in Group 7 at the Cluj Arena in Cluj-Napoca on Sunday.

Kick-off was delayed by an hour due to a water-logged pitch and things did not seem to be going in the right direction as Kelly Bailie put Glentoran ahead on the 13th minute following a Joely Andrews corner.

However two minutes in the second half, Raina Giusti, who had just replaced Sofia Iaderosa at half-time, levelled matters, placing the ball at the back of the net following a cross by Gaia Milan.

The Stripes were now brimming with confidence and on the 58th minute, Charlene Zammit made it 2-1 following a Tracy Teuma corner.
