Late Serrano strike sinks Birkirkara

After back-to-back draws with Gudja United and Hamrun Spartans, Birkirkara suffered their first defeat as Marsaxlokk scored deep into stoppage time to register a narrow win at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

For Pablo Doffo’s side this was the third win in four matches – four matches from which they collected ten points to move seventh along with Mosta on the 11-points mark. The Stripes, on the other hand, remain in third place on 17 points, one behind Gzira United and one ahead of Hibernians.

Just before the end of the first half, Marsaxlokk were reduced to ten men after Juan Cruz Aguilar was sent off but six minutes in the second half, Alessandro Coppola was sent off for Birkirkara.

The game seemed heading for a goalless draw but four minutes in added time, Walter Omar Serrano concluded a great run by exchanging the ball with Wellington de Sousa before hitting low past Birkirkara goalkeeper Giacomo Nava with a shot from just inside the area.
