BOV Premier League second round gets underway

The second round of the BOV Premier League gets underway on Thursday with the remaining matches being played between Friday and Saturday.

At the Centenary Stadium on Thursday, kick-off at 18:30, Santa Lucia face Gzira United.

Four defeats in the last four matches, including last Sunday’s 1-2 defeat to Mosta, left Santa Lucia second from bottom, just one point ahead of bottom-placed Pieta’ Hotspurs. Gzira, on the other hand, returned to winning ways as they defeated Zebbug Rangers 2-0 following a draw with Birkirkara and a defeat to Balzan and now share third place with Birkirkara, two points behind Hibernians and nine behind leaders Hamrun.

In the first round, Gzira defeated Santa Lucia 3-1.

At the National Stadium on Friday, kick-off at 18:00, Zebbug Rangers take on Balzan.

The win over Hamrun failed to lift the Rangers’ morale as they suffered two back-to-back 0-2 defeats to Mosta and Gzira in their last two matches to stay third from bottom on seven points. Balzan, on the other hand, are currently ninth on 17 points and a win could at least temporarily put them in sixth place. They won just one match out of the last seven, losing 1-2 to Birkirkara in their last game.

In the first round, Balzan defeated Zebbug 3-1.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Friday, kick-off at 18:00, Sirens face Birkirkara.

Three wins from the last four matches, including the narrow win over Pieta’ Hotspurs last week, lifted Sirens to tenth place on 15 points. Birkirkara, on the other hand, registered a second successive win, defeating Balzan 2-1 and share third place with Gzira United.

In the first round, Birkirkara defeated Sirens 2-0.

At the National Stadium on Friday, kick-off at 20:15, Marsaxlokk take on leaders Hamrun Spartans.

After collecting some precious points, Marsaxlokk earned just one point from the last three matches, losing 1-2 to Valletta on Sunday. Currently fourth from bottom, they are eager for points to steer further away from the danger zone. However, the Spartans will be all out to claim the three points in order to maintain a most comfortable lead on top the BOV Premier League table. They won five out of the last six matches, defeating Gudja United 1-0 last week.

In the first round, Hamrun beat Marsaxlokk 1-0.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 20:15, Gudja United face Mosta.

Three points separate the two teams as Mosta are currently fifth on 23 points, three ahead of Gudja. Mosta won their last three matches, defeating Santa Lucia 2-1 on Sunday. Gudja, on the other hand, are coming from a narrow defeat to Hamrun after defeating Valletta in the previous game.

In the first round, Gudja defeated Mosta 2-1.

At the National Stadium on Saturday, kick-off at 13:00, Hibernians cross swords with Valletta.

Lying in second place, seven points behind leaders Hamrun Spartans, Hibernians cannot afford dropping any points. They won seven out of the last nine matches, defeating Floriana on Monday. Valletta, on the other hand, are currently eighth, nine points behind the Paolites. They won four of the last five matches, defeating Marsaxlokk 2-1 last week.

In the first round, the two teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday, kick-off at 13:00, Pieta’ Hotspurs face Floriana.

Bottom-placed Pieta’ Hotspurs will be hoping to make life difficult for Floriana in their bid to earn a positive result from this game after collecting just four points from the first thirteen matches. They lost five out of the last six matches, losing 0-1 to Sirens last week. Floriana, on the other hand, are currently seventh on nineteen points. After defeating Zebbug, Santa Lucia and Gudja, the Greens earned just a point from a draw with Marsaxlokk, losing narrowly to Hibernians on Monday.

In the first round, Floriana defeated Pieta’ 2-0.
