BOV Challenge League: Five-star Sliema move eight points clear

Leaders Sliema Wanderers moved eight points clear in the BOV Challenge League as they defeated Zurrieq in a match from the Top Six at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.

Mohamed Abdulahi Awad put the Wanderers ahead on the 17th and seven minutes later, Gabriel Aquilina doubled the score. Jake Engerer made it 3-0 on the 34th. Sliema extended the lead with a goal by Brite Ihuomah on the78th and three minutes from time, Jean Carlos Cloth Goncalves converted a penalty for Sliema’s fifth goal.

In another match, Naxxar Lions were held in a goalless draw by Zejtun Corinthians at the Centenary Stadium.

In the Top Six, Sliema lead the way with 50 points, followed by Naxxar on 42, Zejtun 34, Tarxien 33, Zurrieq 29 and Melita 27.

Meanwhile in the Play-Out, a goal by Omar Khatib on the 35th handed Mqabba a narrow win over Attard at the Victor Tedesco Stadium while a goal by Claudio Antunes Pavlidis, also on the 35th minute, gave Qrendi a narrow win over Mtarfa in another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

In another match at the same venue, Lija Athletic defeated Marsaskala 3-1. Camilo Andres Diaz Arias converted a penalty on the 22nd and although Andres Tenorio Viveros equalised on the 59th, Diaz restored the lead for Lija on the 68th and Duvan Mosquera Torres sealed the issue with a third goal on the 78th.

In the Play-Out, Fgura lead with 26 points, followed by Swieqi and St. Andrews 25, Marsa 24, Lija 20, Attard 19, Mqabba and San Gwann 18, Qrendi 17, Marsaskala 15, Mtarfa 14 and Vittoriosa 13.
