Late penalty keeps Hamrun eleven points clear

Hamrun Spartans struggled much more than expected to beat Pieta’ Hotspurs 2-1 in a top-bottom clash at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.

The Spartans therefore retain an eleven point lead on second-placed Gzira United while Pieta’ remain anchored at the bottom of the table with five points from sixteen matches.

Juan Carlos Corbalan put the Spartans ahead with a fine shot from outside the area which ended in the bottom-right corner.

Pieta’ levelled matters on the 67th minute when substitute Kian Leonardi pounced on a through pass, beat Steve Borg on the run and rounded the goalkeeper before placing the ball at the back of the net.

However ten minutes from time, Hamrun notched the winner when they were awarded a penalty after Roko Prsa was brought down inside the area by Temitope Abraham Ojo and from the penalty spot, Elvis Mashike made no mistake.
