Assikura Women’s League: Birkirkara made to wait for title as Swieqi beat Mgarr

Birkirkara will have to wait at least until the next Matchday to make sure of their 11th domestic title despite beating Mtarfa 15-0 in this week’s outing.

The Stripes saw their celebrations delayed after Swieqi United, trailing Birkirkara by six points in second place, managed to defeat Mġarr United 3-0.

Jose Borg’s Birkirkara are now just one point away from sealing the title. They will face Raiders Lija in mid-April following the international window during which Malta will face Estonia in an international friendly.

A trio of Birkirkara players grabbed a hat-trick in Brisa Campos, captain Stephania Farrugia and Ruth Steer Chetham – whose three goals came in a space of nine minutes.

The other Birkirkara goals came through a brace from Gabriella Zahra and Gaia Milan, together with Marta Grosso and Sara Saliba who put their names on the scoresheet with a single goal each.

Jade Flask scored her 19th goal of the season as she maintains her top spot in the league’s scoring charts. She drew first blood in Swieqi’s matchup against Mġarr, on Wednesday.

The Owls wrapped up the win with two goals from American winger Tatiana Dabney in the second half.

Mġarr, on their part, have now been pipped by Hibernians to third place after the Paolites defeated Raiders Lija 3-0.

Nonetheless, the Greens can potentially lift themselves into third should they beat Mtarfa in their game in hand, pencilled for April 11.

The Paolites, now on 28 points, made sure of the win with two early goals scored by Alexis Espitia – her 12th of the season – and Aleksandra Georgieva. Midfielder Kayleigh Chetcuti scored the other goal in the second half to seal the three-goal victory for Hibernians.
