Darren Abdilla has been appointed as coach of Gzira United following the resignation of Clive Mizzi following the defeat to Zabbar St. Patrick on Sunday.
Abdilla served as coach of St. George’s and Birzebbuga St. Peter’s before joining Floriana as head coach of the nursery. He later served at Vittoriosa Stars, Marsaxlokk, Hibernians and Valletta technical staff. Abdilla joined Gzira United in Division 1 mid-way through season 2014/15, leading the club to third place and the Play-Off spot. The following season, he led the Maroons to promotion to the Premier League after an absence of thirty-four years and the following summer, he signed a new deal as part of the club’s technical staff although he was no longer the head coach. However he was re-appointed as coach a few months later. In summer 2019, he joined Valletta but was sacked in February 2020 when Valletta were ironically sharing the top spot in the table with Floriana. Abdilla re-joined Gzira in summer 2020 but stepped down in January 2024. Last season, he served as coach of Floriana.
The Maroons currently lie at the bottom of the table with just three points from seven matches.
