Sliema Wanderers bounced back from the heavy defeat to Naxxar Lions with a fine 2-0 win over Hamrun Spartans in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Monday.
A win which puts the Wanderers on level points with Hibernians in fourth place, one behind the Spartans. Hamrun, on the other hand, failed to keep the pace with leaders Floriana as they suffered their first defeat after four wins and three draws.
The Wanderers managed to take the lead on 19 minutes when Adam Magri Overend served Fernandinho who sped past three defenders before beating Henry Bonello with a shot from inside the area.
To make matters worse for the Spartans, Semir Smajlagić was sent off on the half hour for a reckless tackle.
Vito Plut doubled the score on 68 minutes when he advanced before slotting the ball past Bonello from inside the area.
