Steve Borg makes final appearance for national team

On Sunday, 12th October 2025, Maltese football bid farewell to one of its most respected and passionate players – Steve Borg – as he will be presented with a memento before the international match against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

For over a decade, Steve has embodied what it means to represent Malta: commitment, pride, and leadership. Both on and off the pitch, he has been a true captain — guiding, inspiring, and setting an example for every player who shared the dressing room with him.

Steve made his Malta debut on 7th October 2011, in a European Championship 2012 qualifier against Latvia at the Skonto Riga Stadium. Then just 23 years, 4 months, and 22 days old, the promising defender was playing for Valletta FC, under coach John Buttigieg.

That evening marked the start of a journey that would span 14 years, filled with challenges, triumphs, and unforgettable moments in the red shirt.

Over his career, Steve Borg played 82 international matches, amassing an impressive 6,440 minutes on the field. Known for his strength, composure, and intelligence in defense, he became the rock at the heart of Malta’s backline for more than a decade.

But Steve’s impact went far beyond tackles and clearances. His leadership qualities saw him rise to the captaincy of the national team — a role he wore with immense pride and dignity. Whether in victory or defeat, Borg led by example, representing Malta with honor and professionalism.

Though primarily a defender, Steve Borg also left his mark on the scoresheet, netting three international goals — each carrying its own story of pride:

  1. 23 March 2019 – vs Faroe Islands (77’ pen) – National Stadium
UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifier – Coach: Ray Farrugia (Club: Valletta)
→ Malta’s Goal No. 242 in international history
  2. 13 October 2020 – vs Latvia (96’) – Daugava Stadium, Riga
UEFA Nations League – Coach: Devis Mangia (Club: Gzira United)
    → Malta’s Goal No. 249
  3. 11 November 2020 – vs Liechtenstein (20’) – National Stadium
Friendly – Coach: Devis Mangia (Club: Gzira United)
    → Malta’s Goal No. 251

Each of these goals reflected Steve’s determination and fighting spirit — traits that defined his entire career.

Beyond the statistics, Steve Borg’s true legacy lies in his character. He has been a role model for younger players, an ambassador for Maltese football, and a symbol of dedication to the national cause. His calm authority and deep sense of responsibility as captain made him a beloved figure among teammates and supporters alike.

As Steve prepares to step out one last time for Malta, we celebrate not only his achievements but also his unwavering love for the game and his country. His journey from his debut in Riga to his farewell in Ta’ Qali tells the story of a man who gave everything for the red shirt.

From the first whistle in 2011 to the final one in 2025, Steve Borg’s contribution to Maltese football has been monumental.

To the captain, the leader, and the gentleman of the game — thank you for your dedication, your courage, and your heart.
