Valletta returned to winning ways as they scored a goal mid-way through the second half to beat Marsaxlokk 1-0 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round Top 6 at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Following a goalless first half, the Citizens took the lead on 67 minutes when off a cross by Shaft Brewer, Yannick Yankam headed the ball home past goalkeeper Mafoumbi.
Six minutes from time, Marsaxlokk were awarded a penalty after a FVS challenge by Vicenzo Potenza the referee for a potential penalty as Sava Radic pushed Weder Silva down inside the area. Radic received a second yellow card and was therefore sent off. However, Nikolai Muscat’s effort from the penalty spot saw Adilson Maringa turn the ball into a corner. The Marsaxlokk captain was sent off immediately after for pushing Thaylor onto the ground.
Five minutes in added time, Marsaxlokk thought they had levelled matters when off a cross by Leandro Aguirre from the left, Marcelo Santos slotted the ball past the Valletta goalkeeper. However, the goal was disallowed for Juvhel Tsoumou’s offside position following FVS review.
