BOV Challenge League: Birzebbuga, Balzan register wins

Leaders Birzebbuga St. Peter’s and second-placed Balzan kept the pace on top the BOV Challenge League as they both registered wins on Saturday. 

Daniel Zerafa scored the all-important goal on 42 minutes for Birzebbuga as they beat St. Andrews 1-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. 

On the other hand, Balzan defeated Vittoriosa Stars 4-1 thanks to goals by James Scicluna on 10 minutes, Clive Gauci on 20 minutes, Chiemezie Stephen Gabriel on 21 minutes and Luis Santos on 26 minutes with Aidan Agius Gilford reducing the gap seven minutes from time. 

Mgarr United were in excellent form as they defeated Swieqi United 5-1 at the Centenary Stadium. Wisdom Osaretin Igiebor put Mgarr ahead on 12 minutes and Cristhyan doubled the score on 28 minutes. Zak Barbara pulled one back for Swieqi on 54 minutes but Cristhyan scored another three goals on 57, 80 and 91 minutes. 

In another match, Sirens beat Pieta’ Hotspurs 4-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Thiago Nonato put Sirensd ahead on 11 minutes and although Arthur Stelmach equalised on 37 minutes, Trezeguet Zammit restored the lead one minute in the second half. Hafiz Mohammed Akadom extended the lead four minutes from time before an own goal on the 90th sealed the issue. 

Birzebbuga lead the way with 27 points, followed by Balzan on 26, Fgura 21 Sirens 20, Melita and St. Andrews 19, Mgarr and Swieqi 17, Gudja 16, Pieta’ 14, Santa Lucia and Zurrieq 12, Vittoriosa 9, Marsa 6, Zebbug 1 and Mtarfa -3.
