Floriana made it two wins out of two as they beat Old Firm rivals Sliema Wanderers 2-0 in a match from the league phase of the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.
The Greens therefore maintained a perfect record and another clean sheet while the Wanderers continue chasing their first points after two matches. The Blues are also yet to score a first goal.
Daniel Portela opted to start with Dunstan Vella instead of Alen Kurtalic while Branko Nisevic made three changes as Nigel Robertha, Gustavo Alcino and Wale Musa Alli replaced Matteo Lorenzi, Brian Gambarte and Nikolaos Karelis.
Floriana managed to take the lead on 37 minutes when Yassine Jbira provided an assist from the right and Dunstan Vella beat Henry Bonello with a low shot from the edge of area.
The Greens doubled the score on 74 minutes. In a counter attack for Sliema, Myles Beerman handled the ball to receive what was supposed to be a second yellow card. However, Floriana challenged the referee for a potential penalty, seconds earlier, after Carlo Zammit Lonardelli appeared to be brought down by Diego Camara inside the area. Referee Ezekiel Barbara ordered a penalty and Paul Mbong converted.
