Balzan cruise past Birzebbuga

Balzan earned another three points thanks to a most comfortable 3-0 win over Birzebbuga St. Peter’s in a clash from the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the National Stadium on Saturday between the two teams who were promoted from the Challenge League last season.

The team led by Andrew Cohen were clearly a better side and scored twice during the first half, adding another in the second. They register a second consecutive win to obtain the third positive result in four matches.

Birzebbuga, on the other hand, remain anchored at the bottom of the table without any points after four matches.

Pietro Tomaselli, Jacob Walker and Jackson Mendoza were preferred to Zachary Cassar, Luis Riascos and Gabriel Costa for Birzebbuga. On the other hand, Balzan had four changes as Cohen named new signing Eder in the starting line-up along with Gabriel Santos, Zachary Grech and Valentino Kuach Yuel. Jake Grech was included as a substitute while Nikola Djoric, Nikola Ignjatovic and Emmanuel Asante were missing.

Balzan took the lead on 13 minutes when Lucas Macula managed to serve Valentino Kuach Yuel who rounded the goalkeeper before slotting the ball inside the empty net.

Sekala Guehi was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from outside the area on 24 minutes.

Balzan doubled the score on the half hour when off a Manuel Djalo through ball, Valentino Kuach Yuel advanced before serving Oluwatobiloba Awosanya on the right and the latter placed the ball at the back of the net.

On 67 minutes, Balzan sealed the issue with a third goal as Awosanya delivered a corner from the left and Lucas Macula flicked the ball past goalkeeper Mattia Chiesa.
