The Malta Football Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Milena Bertolini as Technical Advisor to the Malta Women’s National Team.
The former Italy head coach brings a wealth of experience at both club and international level. During her tenure with the Italian Women’s National Team between 2017 and 2023, Bertolini led the Azzurre to the quarter-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, their first appearance at the tournament in 20 years. She also guided Italy at UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
A UEFA Pro Licence holder, Bertolini enjoyed successful coaching spells with Foroni Verona, Reggiana and Brescia, winning three Italian league titles, three Italian Cups and four Italian Super Cups. Her coaching achievements followed a distinguished playing career as a defender, during which she won three Italian league titles.
Malta head coach Manuela Tesse believes Bertolini’s appointment will build on the contributions of previous collaborators Piero Panzanaro, now head coach of Juventus’ men’s Under-18 team, and Patrizia Panico, who has joined the coaching staff of Como 1907’s women’s team in Italy’s Serie A.
“Having worked alongside Piero Panzanaro and Patrizia Panico, I wanted to build on the knowledge and experience they brought to our setup. Milena’s arrival will help us continue that process, supporting the development of our coaching staff and sharing her expertise with our players,” Tesse said.
Bertolini joins the national team setup as Malta prepares to face Luxembourg in an international friendly at the Centenary Stadium on Friday 9 October at 19:00.
Tesse underlined the importance of the fixture as the team looks ahead to next year’s UEFA Women’s Nations League.
“The friendly against Luxembourg is an important step in our preparations for next year’s Nations League. We want to introduce more young players to international football while retaining the experience and leadership of our senior players. Their guidance is essential in helping the next generation develop and grow within the national team.”
The Malta FA welcomes Milena Bertolini and wishes her every success in her new role.
