Malta have seven points, an unbeaten record, and top spot in Group D1. This makes it seem like there should be a simple success story here. There isn’t. The side coached by Emilio De Leo has certainly upped their game, but narrow wins continue to mask some offensive shortcomings, defensive survival, and reliance on seasoned campaigners. There is one more complication: the restructure of UEFA means that promotion has a new definition.
Football betting adds another layer of attention, with brands such as Unlimluck casino appearing in discussions about promotional funds for newcomers. New players may be able to place football bets using bonus money where an eligible offer permits it, subject to verification, expiry dates and withdrawal conditions.
Seven points look convincing until fine margins are examined
The UEFA has won by 2-1 in away matches against Andorra on September 24, 1-1 in home matches against Gibraltar on October 1 and 1-0 in return matches against Andorra after three days. This gives a total of four goals scored, two goals conceded and seven points in three matches. Gibraltar has a total of two points from two matches while Andorra has one point from three matches.
A comparison to 2024/25 is instructive. Malta achieved seven points then too, but required four games and scored just twice. The winner of that group was Moldova, leaving a playoff path which would end poorly against Luxembourg. The increased scoring rate this fall is good news, even if three games are a small sample size. An entire tournament should not hinge on whether a single total has been seen before.
The Gibraltar draw is especially troublesome. Securing wins in both Andorra matches made room for some separation, but De Leo’s squad were unable to defeat their immediate competition in front of their own fans. It does not prove inferiority, but makes it harder to argue that superiority has been proven against everyone. Small groups are punished in this manner.
Teuma delivered, but Andorra supplied a warning
The next significant event was on October 4th. Alex Satariano dribbled past the opposing defenders down the left flank before Teddy Teuma exchanged passes with Ilyas Chouaref to score diagonally at minute 49. From the match report released by the national federation, it is evident that combination plays were utilized, and not just the opponents’ generosity in conceding the ball.
Nevertheless, Andorra hit the post twice. Firstly, Albert Rosas came close to scoring before half-time while Henry Bonello made a successful save, which later hit the post from the opposing team after the half-time break. Saying that they dominated defensively would neglect these instances. Although Malta kept their score line intact, this does not mean that they never conceded chances to their opponents.
Also adding to the complications during preparation were matters relating to personnel. Captain Matthew Guillaumier had left due to an injury to his groin, while Brandon Paiber stepped in for him with Jake Grech out due to fitness issues. The captain played in the match at 78 appearances, while Satariano was at 50.
March’s Luxembourg defeat still sets the uncomfortable benchmark
The positivity associated with promotion cannot erase the fact that a 5-0 aggregate play-off defeat took place earlier this year. Luxembourg won 2-0 in Ta’ Qali and 3-0 at home. Malta was unable to score in both legs. Teuma’s injury during the first match of March and Joseph Mbong’s red card in Luxembourg made things worse, yet such events cannot be used as an excuse for all the disparities between the two teams.
The above-mentioned game is a tougher benchmark compared to wins against Andorra. According to the locals, De Leo has aimed to play more positive football, yet it does not mean that possession leads to the creation of opportunities and not exposes central defenders. Playing comfortable football in the midfield zone does not mean that it will result in threats.
There are also reasons to believe beyond this team. Prior to the March play-offs, Malta had defeated Finland 1–0 on the road and lost 3–2 to Poland in World Cup qualification. These results were stated by the federation while declaring the preliminary list. These results prove that competitive resistance is possible against superior sides. They don’t prove that such results have become common practice.
UEFA changed promotion rules while everyone was competing
The older previews described first place as Malta’s means to get into League C. UEFA’s revision of the rules describes the competition structure in such a way that all teams from League D would be shifted to League C due to the restructuring process that would take place in 2028/29. Therefore, promotion can no longer be taken as evidence of being better than the rest of the teams.
D1 victory is important as a sport accomplishment. It would help to prove that one has competed well with the similar teams and thus improve their chances of being better in comparison. However, being in first place and getting promoted through a competition are no longer one and the same concept within the new context. In order to assess De Leo, it is necessary to analyze the performance.
However, ranking better than the Group D2 winner could give Malta a chance to compete in the EURO 2028 play-offs.
What awaits De Leo is harder than another low-scoring win
Malta’s final group assignment is away to Gibraltar on November 16, after their rivals visit Andorra three days earlier. A draw in Gibraltar would guarantee first place: Malta would reach eight points, while their opponents could finish with no more than six. If Gibraltar fail to beat Andorra beforehand, De Leo’s team would already be beyond reach. These are calculations from confirmed standings, not predictions of results.
A cautious forecast favours Malta to finish first, given their five-point advantage and unbeaten record. A narrow, demanding finale looks more plausible than an assumption of easy superiority. Longer term, progress depends on more reliable chance creation, safer possession under pressure and sufficient depth when experienced midfielders are unavailable. Genuine success would mean competing convincingly above this level, not receiving a promotion everybody else receives too.
