Esther Azzopardi is one of 40 candidates who were officially welcomed in Zurich on Monday by FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and FIFA Head of Women’s Referees, Sonia Denoncourt.
Until 2015, the 40 referees from 33 different countries will be assessed medically, technically and physically before the final selection of candidates is made by the FIFA Refereeing Department and members of the Referees’ Committee.
The candidates will also be under scrutiny to be appointed for three major women’s football tournaments in 2014, namely the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada and the Women’s Youth Olympic Football Tournament in China.
