Birkirkara eliminated after suffering 1-2 defeat

KÍ Klaksvík registered a 2-1 win over Birkirkara at the Gundadalur in Torshavn to reach the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League where they will be meeting Zalgiris Vilnius. The Faroese side qualify with a 3-2 aggregate score.

Following last week’s 1-1 draw, the hosts started as favourites to secure a place in the next round and Birkirkara knew it would be no easy task to win away from home.

Coach Paul Zammit failed to recover any of the injured players but still made one change as Neil Micallef replaced Edward Herrera.

The Stripes were unlucky to concede the first goal at the end of the first half – two minutes in added time – with Deni Pavlović, scorer of last week’s equaliser being again on target.

Páll Klettskard doubled the score on the 59th minute to give Klaksvík a comfortable lead.

Marcelinho pulled one back for Birkirkara but this was not enough to stop them from making a quick exit from the competition.
