Valletta registered their first win in the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round as they defeated Marsaxlokk 3-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Friday.
The Citizens, who were coming from two goalless draws in their first two matches, therefore, managed to inflict the first defeat on Marsaxlokk.
During the first half, goalkeeper Adilson Maringa came to the rescue with a fine save on a Dodo effort for Marsaxlokk and then Steve Borg was unlucky to hit the upright for Valletta off a cross by Yuri.
Valletta took the lead one minute in the second half when off a cross by Thaylor from the right, the ball was deflected by Corbalan and Jefferson slotted the ball past goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi.
Six minutes later, the Citizens doubled the score when off another cross by Thaylor, Yuri Messias placed the ball at the back of the net.
Marsaxlokk reduced the gap on 63 minutes when off a Redon Mihana corner from the right, Ulises Arias addressed the ball in the direction of Joseph Minala who hit home from close range.
One minute in added time, Nevin Portelli, served by Ensell Attard, hit the foot of the upright with a diagonal shot from the left.
Valletta, however, sealed the issue with a third goal three minutes in added time thanks to Yannick Yankam who exchanged the ball with Andrea Zammit before slotting the ball past the Marsaxlokk goalkeeper.
