Malta FA Jubilee Cup: Birkirkara through to Round of 16 after penalty shoot-out

Birkirkara secured a place in the Round of 16 of the Malta FA Jubilee Cup but needed the penalty shoot-out to eliminate BOV Amateur League I side Victoria Hotspurs in one of the two matches from the Round of 32 at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

Christian Mercieca put the Hotspurs ahead on the half-hour and it was only eight minutes from time that they equalised through Macula.

In the penalty shoot-out, Macula, Kemar Reid, Kaiden Fenech and Luis Cordova scored the four penalties for Birkirkara with Christian Mercieca and Emmanuel Mbong scoring for the Hotspurs. Shaun Attard missed and Gianluca Muscat’s penalty was saved by Birkirkara goalkeeper Matthew Grech.

The Stripes will be facing Sliema Wanderers or St. Andrews in the next round.

Meanwhile in another match, Zebbug Rangers scored a late goal to beat Sirens 2-1.

Kalani Capponi Delarole put Zebbug ahead on 12 minutes and although Hafiz Mohammed Akadom equalised on 26 minutes, Michael Silva Oliveira notched the winner for Zebbug on the 90th.

Zebbug will be meeting Attard or Lija Athletic in the next round.
