Valletta extend unbeaten record with narrow win over Hibernians

Valletta registered a fourth successive win to extended their unbeaten record to nine matches as they defeated Hibernians 1-0 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.

A win which puts the Citizens, at least, temporarily in first place, two points ahead of Floriana who will be facing Birkirkara later on Saturday. Despite suffering a third consecutive defeat, Hibernians are still sharing fourth place with Sliema Wanderers, who, however, have a match in hand.

The Citizens had the first attempt at goal on 8 minutes when off a cross by Jackson Mendoza, Jefferson managed to head the ball in the direction of Yuri Messias whose first time effort hit the crossbar.

Valletta, however, managed to take the lead on 38 minutes. Sava Radic sent Thaylor Aldama through and the latter lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Hugo Sacco who had rushed to the edge of the area and despite being surrounded by Xuereb and Pedrao, he placed it at the back of the net from close range.
