The Malta Futsal National Team underwent a fruitful campaign in the Futsal Week Tournament last week, producing a number of impressive displays.

The tournament represented new Head Coach Roberto Menichelli’s first international matches in charge of the team. The Futsal Week Tournament was held in Labin, Croatia.

Malta’s first encounter was a tight clash against Türkiye that finished in a thrilling 4-4 draw, with Collin Sammut, Maicon Da Silva, Luke Gatt and Giancarlo Sammut getting on the scoresheet for Malta. The match eventually went to penalties, and Türkiye emerged as winners.

This was then followed by a match against a strong Greenland side. Despite a positive performance from Malta, the match finished in a 6-2 defeat, with Collin Sammut and Nathan Cope scoring for Malta.

Malta’s final match of the tournament was played on Sunday 25th January, taking on Scotland. Malta produced their best performance of the competition, securing a 5-2 win to finish the tournament on a high. Collin Sammut scored a brace, while Giancarlo Sammut, Aiden Buhagiar and Michael Borg also got their names on the scoresheet.

The Malta Futsal National Team has now returned to Malta, with this tournament serving as great preparation ahead of the upcoming 2028 FIFA Futsal World Cup European Qualifiers, with Phase 1 set to be played in April 2026.
