Hibernians won the BOV Super Cup as they came from behind to defeat champions Hamrun Spartans 2-1 after extra-time, notching the winner deep into added time in the second half of extra-time.
This Spartans managed to take the lead thanks to a penalty and hit the woodwork twice but Hibs equalised thanks to another penalty in the second half to force extra time. In extra time, the Paolites hit the upright but after Hamrun had a player sent off, Kevin Halabaku notched the winner three minutes in added time.
Ħamrun Spartans had an excellent chance to take the lead on 21 minutes when Damir Ceter served Shaisen Attard on the right but the latter’s effort from the edge of the area hit the crossbar with goalkeeper Laurentiu Branescu beaten.
The Spartans managed to take the lead on 27 minutes. Rafael Compri sent Damir Ceter through on the right only for the latter to be brought down inside the area by Bjorn Kristensen. Referee Alex Johnson ordered a penalty and from the penalty spot, Emerson Marcelina converted.
Eight minutes in the second half, the Spartans threatened once again when Damir Ceter provided the pass from the right but the unmarked Danilo Bulevardi hit the crossbar.
However, nine minutes from time, Hibernians equalised when they were awarded a penalty after Miullen was floored by Ognjen Bjelicic inside the area with the Brazilian forward made no mistake from the penalty spot.
The match therefore went into extra-time and two minutes in the second half of extra-time, new signing Ruben Hernandez was unlucky to hit the upright with a header off a cross by Duane Bonnici from the left.
Hamrun had to play the final six minutes of extra-time in ten men after substitute Ognjen Bjelicic received a second yellow card for a foul on Miullen just outside the area.
Three minutes in added time, the Paolites made it 2-1 as Kevin Halabaku concluded a solo effort with a powerful drive from outside the area which beat goalkeeper Henry Bonello.
After the match, Hibernians were presented with the BOV Super Cup by Malta FA Vice-President Dr Matthew Paris and Bank of Valletta Chief Operations Officer Ernest Agius in the presence of Malta FA Vice-Presidents Adrian Casha and Trustin Farrugia Cann.
