In the week leading up to the start of the 2026/2027 league campaign, Mqabba F.C. officially presented the squad that will compete in National League I.
The squad comprises 25 players, combining experience with emerging talent. The Club has also secured the services of five foreign players.
Club President Terrence Briffa provided a comprehensive overview of the work and investment the Club is undertaking as part of a long-term plan initiated two years ago, when he assumed leadership of the Club. He explained that, after the 2025/2026 season, the administration unanimously confirmed the technical staff for another season. The team will once again be entrusted to experienced coach George Magri, assisted by former Club player Claudio Calleja. Mr Louis Agius will continue as Team Manager and will also oversee the youth team, enabling the two teams to work more closely together.
Mr Briffa said the core of the squad has been retained from last season, which proved a highly positive campaign, with the team remaining in contention for promotion until the final matchday. He added that new signings, including foreign players, joined during the summer to strengthen the squad and boost its competitiveness.
He concluded his address by expressing appreciation to all the individuals who dedicate their time to the Club in various capacities, and to the Club’s sponsors for their continued support.
Coach George Magri also addressed the event, expressing his satisfaction with the squad’s composition for the upcoming season. He said that the new signings were carefully considered and complement the strong squad already in place from last season. He added that, in recent weeks, the team has worked extensively on both its physical preparation and tactical approach to ensure it is as well prepared as possible for the start of the season. Coach Magri thanked the Club administration for its trust in him and
for managing the Club with a long-term vision.
Assistant Coach Claudio Calleja expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Club again, having previously represented it as a player for several seasons in both the Premier League and First Division. He noted that, after last season, it was essential to strengthen the squad’s depth to remain competitive throughout the entire campaign. He also emphasised the positive atmosphere within the Club and the dressing room, underscoring the importance of unity for the remainder of the season.
Finally, Club Team Manager Louis Agius said this season continues the work carried out over the previous two seasons. He explained that, upon assuming management, the current administration implemented a long-term strategy focused on building a competitive team and transforming the Club’s mentality and culture. This approach led to an immediate promotion in the first season, and in the second, the team remained in contention until the end for a second consecutive promotion. He added that this season’s squad further builds on the positive momentum of recent years. In conclusion, he thanked the Club administration for its ongoing investment in the Club’s infrastructure, which is contributing towards an increasingly professional environment for the team.
