This summer, the team was strengthened with the signing of Keith Fenech (Qormi), William Borg (Rabat), Wayne Buttigieg (M?arr) and David Cauchi (Mosta). Wayne Borg St John and Albert Aquilina are back with the club after spending last season on loan with Lija and Birkirkara respectively. Mellieha’s two foreigners will be Englishman Phil Taylor and Brazilian Thiago.
Vella Borg said that over these fifty years, the club had also managed to play in the Premeir League, describing the period 1998-2003 as the golden years. A period during which the club secured three consecutive promotions. He said that now the club boasts excellent facilities and these will hopefully be complemented with good results on the field of play.
Club secretary Sunny Abela said that following last season’s disappointment, the club is now determined to make up for last year’s disappointing results and is confident Mellieha will do better this season.
New Mellieha coach Jojo Bajada said he is glad with the players at his disposal and the commitment and dedication show so far by the squad which is relatively young with an average age of 24. Bajada said the club have enough players which could lead the team to be among the main challengers for promotion.
Former player and coach Dennis Fenech, who has now been appointed as technical director, said the fact that a number of former players are back with the club encourage all to work harder to give their very best for their home town. Goalkeepers’ coach Joe Cauchi also praised the commitment shown by the players so far.
