Floriana ensured retaining sole leadership in the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round Top 6 as they defeated Birkirkara 2-0 at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Thanks to this second win in the Top 6, they now lead with 29 points, four ahead of Hamrun Spartans and seven ahead of Valletta and Sliema Wanderers but all these have a game in hand. Birkirkara, on the other hand, suffered a third consecutive defeat to remain at the bottom of the Top 6 with 16 points.
Floriana managed to take the lead on 19 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Chico Teixeira was floored inside the area by Leandro Lacunza – a decision confirmed after FVS review and from the penalty spot, Jake Grech converted.
The Greens doubled the score on 33 minutes when Mattia Veselji, served by Fede Varela on the right, had a shot deflected by Stefan Marjanovic past goalkeeper Matthew Grech for an own goal.
