Hamrun Spartans handed Floriana their first defeat as a brace by Luke Montebello enabled them to win 2-1 in a match from the 360 Sports Malta Premier Opening Round Top 6 at the National Stadium on Sunday.
The Greens therefore stay three points behind leaders Birkirkara and two ahead of third-placed Sliema Wanderers. Hamrun, on the other hand, are still fifth.
The Spartans managed to take the lead on 8 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Carlo Zammit Lonardelli was adjudged to having fouled Raphael Lopes and from the penalty spot, Luke Montebello converted.
Hamrun doubled the score one minute from the end of the first half when following a cross inside the area, the ball fell in the direction of Luke Montebello on the left and he slotted the ball past goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi.
Eight minutes in the second half, Floriana reduced the gap when Franklin Sasere’s conclusion from the left was partially saved by Henry Bonello and substitute Kyrian Nwoko placed the ball at the back of the net from close range.
