FA Trophy: Comfortable wins for Gzira United, Lija Athletic

FA TrophyFirst Division sides Birzebbuga St. Peter’s, Gudja United, Gzira United, Lija Athletic, St. George’s and Zurrieq and Second Division sides Gharghur and Zabbar St. Patrick secured a place in the third round of the FA Trophy as eight second round matches were played at four different venues.

St. George’s defeated St. Andrews 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the end of extra-time in a clash between two First Division sides.

Noah Olewole put St. George’s ahead on the 10th minute but Trayo Grozev equalised on the 73rd to force extra-time. Marko Ivanovic made it 2-1 for St. Andrews on 104 minutes but seven minutes in the second half of extra-time, Gabriel Okechukwu restored equilibrium. Penalties therefore had to decide the issue with St. George’s scoring five through Mark Tanti, Rennie Tanti, Noah Olewole, Anthony Bonello and Randall Vella and St. Andrews scoring four thanks to Trayo Grozev, Joseph Farrugia, Brian Said and Matteo Desira Buttigieg.

Tarabai puts Hibernians seven points clear

BOV-Premier-LeagueLeaders Hibernians moved seven points clear in the BOV Premier League table as they returned to winning ways, beating Birkirkara 1-0 in a top-of-the-table clash.

The Paolites therefore extended their unbeaten run to nine matches after being held in a draw by Tarxien last week. For the Stripes, this was the third defeat in nine matches.

Meanwhile a brace by Vito Plut and a goal by Brooke Farrugia enabled Floriana to make a great comeback from two goals down to beat Mosta 3-2.

Third win in a row for Qormi

BOV-Premier-LeagueA penalty early in the second half enabled Qormi to beat Tarxien Rainbows 1-0 and therefore register a third consecutive win. Thanks to this win, Josef Mansueto’s sides move fourth in the BOV Premier League table, two points ahead of Tarxien.

For the Rainbows, this was a rather disappointing result after they collected four points from the last two matches after a 3-1 win over Birkirkara and a 1-1 draw with leaders Hibernians.

Meanwhile Pietà Hotspurs returned to winning ways as they beat Zebbug Rangers 1-0 in a clash between the two newly-promoted sides.

FA Trophy: Spartans beat Vittoriosa on penalties to reach third round

Hamrun Spartans defeated First Division side Vittoriosa Stars on penalties while Siggiewi and Swieqi beat opposition from Division 3.

Zebbug Rangers continue to eye their first win as they take on Zebbug Rangers, Qormi seek a third consecutive win as they face Tarxien Rainbows while Mosta take on Floriana in a direct clash between two teams thirsty for victory.

UEFA appointment for Clayton Pisani, Mitchell Scerri

clayton-pisani-mitchell-scerriUEFA has appointed FIFA Referee Clayton Pisani and FIFA Assistant Referee Mitchell Scerri to act as match officials in the Under 17 Group 4 Qualifying matches being held in Paphos, Cyprus between the 25th and 30th October.

Other appointed match officials are from Armenia, Cyprus and Moldova and the participating teams are England, France, FYR Macedonia and Cyprus.
