Hibs beat Stripes to close in on leaders Valletta

BOV-Premier-LeagueHibernians will start the third round just two points behind leaders Valletta following a fine 2-0 win over Birkirkara in this weekends big match from the BOV Premier League.

After losing to Balzan last week, this second consecutive defeat for the Stripes means that they will start the final phase in fourth place on the 21-point mark, six behind Valletta, four behind Hibernians and two behind Balzan.

BOV Division 1: Gzira, Hamrun edge closer to promotion

BOV-First-DivisionGzira United and Hamrun Spartans keep marching on in the BOV First Division, moving no less than twelve points and eleven points clear respectively after both registered wins on Sunday.

A goal by Ian Zammit gave Gzira United a narrow win over Pietà Hotspurs at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. On the other hand, Hamrun Spartans scored five in the second half as they beat Gudja United 5-0 at the Centenary Stadium. Jake Grech put Hamrun ahead on the 58th, Mark Anthony Borg doubled the score three minutes later, Haruna Garba made it 3-0 on the 65th with Jake Grech and Saturday Nanapere adding another two goals in added time.

BOV Division 2: Marsa move top

BOV-Second-DivisionMarsa moved on top the BOV Second Division table following a 2-0 win over Birzebbuga St. Peter’s while Sirens were held in a draw by Zabbar St. Patrick on Sunday.

Goals by Gilbert Martin on the 2nd minute and Benjamin Ayuba on the 42nd gave Marsa a 2-0 win over Birzebbuga St. Peter’s at the Charles Abela Stadium. On the other hand, at the Sirens Stadium, Sirens and Zabbar St. Patrick shared the spoils in a goalless draw.

Bojan Kaljevic hands Balzan sixth successive win

BOV-Premier-LeagueMontenegrin striker Bojan Kaljevic scored on his return after a long-term injury to hand Balzan a sixth consecutive win to make sure of starting the third round in third place, four points behind leaders Valletta.

Floriana, on the other hand, suffered the third defeat in six matches and will therefore start the next round in fifth place on 20 points.

Naxxar condemn Sliema to fifth consecutive defeat

BOV-Premier-LeagueSliema Wanderers suffered a fifth consecutive defeat as Naxxar Lions scored twice early in the second half to register a 2-1 win at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

The Wanderers fall into the ninth place and will start the second phase on 12 points, one behind Pembroke. Naxxar, on the other hand, start on the 7-point mark, two ahead of Qormi.

Meanwhile at the Hibernians Stadium, Valletta scored twice in the second half to beat Qormi 2-0 and make sure of starting the third round at least two points ahead of the team in second place, on 27 points.
