Nine Premier League players suspended

20110208-101108.jpgNine Premier League players were handed a one-match ban by the MFA Disciplinary Commissioner after the weekend’s matches.

The worst hit were Tarxien Rainbows who had three players suspended, namely Wesley Lima Silva, Owen Bugeja and Matthew Tabone. The other players to be suspended are Marcelo Dias (Hibernians), Andrew Scicluna (Naxxar), Clifford Gatt Baldacchino (Sliema), Luke Dimech (Valletta), Clifford Gauci and Javier Diaz Serrano (Zebbug).

MFRA condemns assault on referee

mosta-groundThe Malta Football Referees’ Association issued a statement in which in condemned an assault on a match official which took place in the referees’ dressing room at the Charles Abela Stadium on Monday after the Youth League match between Gzira United and Kirkop United.

The statement says that this unprovoked assault took place inside the dressing room and the referee was beaten several times and the individual who attacked him had to be restrained by the two assistant referees. The referee was then taken to the Health Centre and a report was filed at the Police Station.

Local players vote for FIFA FIFPro World XI 2014

hogg-voting-fifpro-best-player2014As in previous years, representatives of footballers’ unions are travelling all over the world to invite players to participate in the vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI 2014. Local players from the Premier Division and First Division join their peers from all over the world and cast their votes, choosing the best performing players of 2014.

MFPA representatives are visiting local clubs to distribute voting forms to players after visiting the Maltese National Team players at the hotel during their free time between the double fixture against Norway and Italy for EURO 2016 qualifications.

Xewkija, Nadur held in draws

Gozo-Football-AssociationJoint-leaders Xewkija Tigers and Nadur Youngsters dropped their first points in the Melita First Division in Gozo as they were held in draws by Kercem Ajax and Victoria Hotspurs respectively.

On Saturday, Victoria Hotspurs held Nadur in a 1-1 draw. Rodney Buttigieg put the Hotspurs ahead on 38 minutes with Joseph Vella equalising on the 68th. On the other hand, on Sunday, Kercem held Xewkija in another 1-1 draw with Anderson Mendes Ribeiro putting the Ajax ahead on the half-hour and John Camilleri levelling matters on the 58th.

More Maltese officials attend UEFA CORE Programme

trustin-jurgen-castilloElite Referee Trustin Farrugia Cann and Elite Assistant Referees Jurgen Spiteri and David Castillo were awarded diplomas for successfully completing their UEFA CORE (Centre of Refereeing Excellence) earlier this month at UEFA Centre in Nyon, Switzerland while another three officials, Philip Farrugia, Ryan Aquilina and Rick Heckenlaible have just started this same course.

Trustin Farrugia Cann, Jurgen Spiteri and David Castillo attended the Introductory Course between the 18th and 27th March, and since then have been closely monitored by referees’ coach Rune Pedersen (Norway), assistant referees’ coach Goggen Holen (Norway), and physical fitness coaches Simon Breivik (England) and Herbert Barr (Northern Ireland).

UEFA appoints Alan Mario Sant for UEFA Youth League match Monaco vs Benfica

alan-mario-santUEFA has appointed FIFA Referee Alan Mario Sant for the UEFA Youth League Group C match Monaco vs Benfica, to be played on Wednesday at the Stade de formation AS Monaco 1 – La Turbie.

The other members of the refereeing team will be FIFA Assistant Referee Christopher Francalanza and Elite Assistant Duncan Sultana, while Johan Hamel has been appointed as 4th Official by the French Football Federation.
