Floriana edge past Birkirkara to join Hamrun on top

Floriana re-joined Hamrun Spartans on top the BOV Premier League table as they defeated Birkirkara 2-1 at the National Stadium on Saturday. Hamrun, however, have a game in hand.

Birkirkara, on the other hand, have now gone three matches without a win, collecting just one point. They continue to share the fifth place with Hibernians and Naxxar Lions but both have a game in hand.

Floriana took the lead on the 22nd minute when Mattia Veselji rounded two defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Marcel Zapytowski.

Three minutes later, the Greens were awarded a penalty after Enrico Pepe floored Matheus Souza. However, Mattia Veselji’s effort from the penalty spot was neutralised by the Birkirkara goalkeeper.

Birkirkara levelled matters on the 67th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Oualid El Hasni handled the ball inside the area and former Floriana forward Andrei Ciolacu converted from the penalty spot.

However eight minutes from time, Floriana regained the lead courtesy of Kemar Reid who headed the ball home from close range following a cross from the right by Aleandro Garzia and deflected by Dunstan Vella.
