Andre Schembri joins Panionios in the Greek Super League

Malta international striker signed a one-year deal with Athens-based side Panionios GSS in the Greek Super League following the relegation of his former club Olympiakos Volou to the Fourth Division. The Greek Football Association issued the go ahead to the Maltese international to sign a new deal even though the transfer window has closed.

Schembri’s target was to play in the Greek Super League, however after the relegation of Olympiakos Volou to the Fourth Division, the twenty-five year old had no other option but to secure a new deal with a new club.

Since the Greek Super League kicked off on the 27th August, Panionios GSS played four games earning seven points from these games and are currently third in the Super League table. Schembri trained with his new club for the past two weeks and was able to sign his contract today after being officially presented to the Greek media.

The player will be back in Malta next week due to international matches against Latvia and Israel respectively.

Andre Schembri said that these months were not easy for him due to the whole saga of his former club Olympiakos Volou F.C. His aim is now to remain focused, train hard and do his best to make his debut with Panionios as soon as possible.

Schembri also thanked his former coach Javi Garcia, his team mates and all Olympiakos Volou supporters for a very warm welcome he was given during the past few months.

Andre Schembri scored sixteen goals last year with Ferencvaros in Hungary and also scored one goal in the Europa League Qualifiers with Olympiakos Volou F.C. Schembri started his career overseas with Eintracht Braunschweig (Germany) and later moved on to play for Carl Zeis Jena (Germany), Austria Karnten (Austria) and Ferencvaros (Hungary).
