Assikura Women’s League: Swieqi United aim to stay top

Swieqi United will meet Mġarr United in the second round of the Top Four phase, aiming to defend their position at the summit of the Assikura Women’s League.

The Owls climbed to first place after a dramatic late penalty secured a crucial win over Hibernians. Venezuelan international Rafanny converted from the spot, edging Swieqi one point ahead of their rivals.

This weekend’s clash against Mġarr is another pivotal moment in the title race.

The Greens sit third in the standings, just three points behind Swieqi, following an impressive 3-2 victory over reigning champions Birkirkara.

However, Mġarr will have to contend with injury setbacks, in captain Brenda Borg and summer signing Veronique Mifsud.

Meanwhile, Birkirkara have dropped to fourth on 32 points, with their hopes of retaining the title fading.

Vince Galea’s team will face Hibernians, now second in the table, as they look to revive their campaign.

Hibernians will be hoping for the full recovery of Brazilian playmaker Joelma, who has netted 15 goals this season but was absent from the starting XI in their previous outing.
