Darren Abdilla no longer coach of Floriana FC

Darren Abdilla is no longer the coach of Floriana FC.

Abdilla had joined the Greens last summer, leading them to the top spot in the 360Sports Malta Premier Opening Round but after a third place in the Closing Round, they finished third in the Final Four following a defeat to Hamrun Spartans on penalties in the semi-final and a 4-0 win over Sliema Wanderers. However, throughout the season, they collected the highest number of points – 62 – compared to Sliema’s 58, Birkirkara’s 56 and Hamrun’s 52.

Darren Abdilla coached St. George’s and Birzebbuga St. Peter’s before joining Floriana as head coach of the nursery. He later served at Vittoriosa Stars, Marsaxlokk, Hibernians and Valletta technical staff. Abdilla joined Gzira United in Division 1 mid-way through season 2014/15, leading the club to third place and the Play-Off spot. The following season, he led the Maroons to promotion to the Premier League after an absence of thirty-four years and the following summer, he signed a new deal as part of the club’s technical staff although he was no longer the head coach. However he was re-appointed as coach a few months later. In summer 2019, he joined Valletta but was sacked in February 2020 when Valletta were ironically sharing the top spot in the table with Floriana. Abdilla re-joined Gzira in summer 2020 but stepped down in January 2024.
