Floriana turn defeat into victory to take narrow lead ahead of second leg

Floriana came from behind to defeat Haverfordwest County of Wales in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League first qualifying round at the Centenary Stadium on Tuesday.

The two teams will meet once again on Thursday 17 at the Parc-Y-Scarlet with the team emerging as the winner of the two-legged tie facing FC Ballkani of Kosovo. 

New Floriana coach Daniel Portela handed new signings Guilherme Cioletti, Lucas Lopez, Iago Mendonca, Federico Varela, Mustapha Jah, Charles M’Mombwa and Mattia Veselji a start while Todor Glisovic was included as a substitute during the second half.

Haverforwest County managed to take the lead on 27 minutes when off a Daniel Hawkins cross from the right, Ben Ahmun headed home past goalkeeper Cioletti.

The Greens levelled matters on 42 minutes. Federico Varela, served on the left by Gonzalo Gamarra, delivered an inviting cross for the same Gamarra who headed the ball home past goalkeeper Luc Rees. 

Floriana turned the score in their favour on 59 minutes when the referee ordered a penalty as Alaric Jones was adjudged to have pushed Lucas Lopez down inside the area and from the penalty spot, Jake Grech converted.
