Another eight teams secured a spot in Round 2 of the Malta FA Jubilee Cup Phase 1 as they registered wins on Saturday.
In the North Region, San Gwann came from behind to beat Mellieha 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium. Michael Camilleri put Mellieha ahead on 20 minutes but Omar Elouni scored twice on 48 and 49 minutes to hand San Gwann victory.
San Gwann will be facing Lija Athletic or Mdina Knights in Round 2.
In the South Region, Xghajra Tornados defeated Mqabba 2-0 at the Centenary Stadium courtesy of Morientes Muscat on 47 minutes and a Larson Mallia penalty on 59 minutes.
In Round 2, Xghajra will be facing Kirkop United who defeated Sta. Venera Lightnings 5-1 in a match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
A penalty by James Oghenekewaro on 12 minutes put Kirkop ahead and although Sta. Venera equalised five minutes later courtesy of Andres Martines, Dicko Drissa restored the lead for Kirkop seven minutes from the end of the first half. Oghenekewaro converted another penalty on 68 minutes with Drissa scoring again ten minutes later. Halen Grima made it 5-1 six minutes from time.
In another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Senglea Athletic defeated Ghaxaq 5-0.
Jake Stensen put Senglea ahead on 31 minutes and two minutes from the end of the first half, Ogchukwi Junior Ohalewe doubled the score. Timothy Thomas missed a penalty on 51 minutes but he scored Senglea’s third goal on the hour. Leejoe Schembri converted a penalty on 74 minutes and after Joao Otavio de Jesus Ganzert missed a penalty for Ghaxaq on 78 minutes, Ohalewe scored Senglea’s fifth ten minutes from time.
In Round 2, Senglea will be facing Kalkara United or Qrendi.
In the Gozo Region, champions Qala Saints beat Xewkija Tigers 3-0 at the Gozo Stadium to set up a clash with Zebbug Rovers.
Andre Martins converted a penalty on 11 minutes and Gilberto Carrara converted another on 35 minutes with Martins scored another goal ten minutes in the second half.
In another match, SK Victoria Wanderers defeated Sannat Lions 4-1.
Diego Garcia out the Wanderers ahead on 4 minutes and Jose Wilkson doubled the score six minutes from the end of the first half. Kieran Calleja pulled one back eight minutes in the second half but Wilkson scored again on 75 minutes and Diego Garcia added another two minutes in added time.
SK Victoria Wanderers will be facing Nadur Youngsters in Round 2.
Meanwhile from the Member Associations, Malta Veterans and MAFA will be contesting the ‘final’ in Round 2 after both needed the penalty shoot-out to eliminate their opponents.
IN the first match at the Charles Abela Stadium, Malta Veterans defeated SWAN 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
Ian Zammit put the Veterans ahead on 15 minutes but SWAN turned the score in their favour thanks to a brace by Auwal Abba on 47 and 73 minutes. However, Manolito Micallef equalised on 77 minutes.
In the penalty shoot-out, Andrew Cohen, Ian Zammit, Justin Grioli, George Frendo and Manolito Micallef scored for the Veterans while Auwal Abba, Darrell Baldacchino, Klajdi Qose and Gabriel Hernandez scored for SWAN. Sean Lee Lanzon missed the only penalty for the latter.
In another match, MAFA defeated IASC 4-3 on penalties following a 4-4 draw.
Fabrizio Farrugia put MAFA ahead on 14 minutes but Ishmael Grech equalised on 28 minutes and Diego Ovallos converted a penalty on 35 minutes to put them ahead. One minute later, Juan Navarro made it 2-2 for MAFA. Diego Ovals restored the lead for IASC on 58 minutes and although Anas Souhaile levelled matters once again on 72 minutes, Ovals scored again for IASC two minutes later. However Anthony Spiteri forced extra time for MAFA with a goal two minutes from time.
In the penalty shoot-out, Anas Souhaile, Nikola Neskovic, Lamin Saho and Anthony Spiteri scored for MAFA with Jerome Fiteni, Marlon Aparicio and Kelber Guevara scoring for IASC with Jorge Carreno and Diego Ovallos missing their penalties.
