Hamrun Spartans strike late to beat Marsaxlokk

Hamrun Spartans scored two late goals to beat Marsaxlokk 2-0 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Tuesday.

The Spartans, therefore, register a third win in four matches to move top on 12 points, at least temporarily, before Hibernians take on Tarxien Rainbows in the derby. Marsaxlokk, on the other hand, remain on nine points as they suffered a second successive defeat and a third defeat in four matches.

The Spartans scored the all-important goal on 84 minutes when a ass by Joseph Mbong was deflected by a defender and substitute Mouad El Fanis beat goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi with a fine rising shot from outside the area.

One minute from time, Hamrun were awarded a penalty after N’Dri Koffi ended on the ground when  challenged by Mafoumbi. A harsh decision on the Southseasiders as there seemed to be no contact between the two. However, from the penalty spot, Koffi converted.
