Floriana scored early in the game and deep in stoppage time to beat Birkirkara 2-0 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.
The Greens, therefore, regain the top spot after Valletta had temporarily moved first following the narrow win over Hibernians. This was the fifth consecutive win for Floriana who are now sure of playing in the Top 6 along with Valletta.
Birkirkara, on the other hand, lie in joint-sixth place with Marsaxlokk, who however have a game in hand.
Floriana had a perfect start, taking the lead after just four minutes. Jake Grech delivered a short corner from the left, Federco Varela’s cross was deflected by a defender and Mustapha Jah headed home from close range.
However, two minutes in added time, Floriana doubled the score. Jake Grech concluded a good run on the left flank with an assist for Mattia Veselji who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Martinez.
