Malta drawn in Group B2 of Women’s European Qualifiers

Malta has been drawn against Switzerland, Northern Ireland and Türkiye in Group B2 of the Women’s European Qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The draw was held on Tuesday 4th November 2025 in Nyon, Switzerland.

The Malta Women’s National Team will be competing in League B, having secured promotion during their remarkable performance in the UEFA Women’s Nations League earlier this year, finishing top of Group C2. As a result, they secured promotion to League B, the second time that this has been done under the leadership of Head Coach Manuela Tesse.

The team will be looking to continue this upward trajectory in the Women’s European Qualifiers league stage.

The UEFA European Qualifiers league stage, which contains 53 teams, is played in the same format as the UEFA Women’s Nations League, with teams split into three leagues. League A has 16 teams, League B has 16 teams, while League C has 21 teams.

Commenting on the draw, Tesse remarked: “It could have been better but it could have been worse. We knew that when you go up the level you will face strong teams. We will prepare the best way possible. We were already in League B before so we can use that experience and take it to the pitch.”

The Women’s European Qualifiers league stage will take place over six matchdays, with each team facing one another twice. In principle, the matchdays are as follows:

Matchday 1: Tuesday 3rd March 2026
Matchday 2: Saturday 7th March 2026
Matchday 3: Tuesday 14th April 2026
Matchday 4: Saturday 18th April 2026
Matchday 5: Friday 5th June 2026
Matchday 6: Tuesday 9th June 2026

UEFA will have 11 spots in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with an additional team having the possibility to qualify through FIFA’s intercontinental playoffs. At the end of the league phase, group standings and overall league rankings will determine who qualifies directly for the competition, and the qualification and seeding for the play-offs.
