BOV Challenge League: Birzebbuga defeat Fgura to move to just one point behind three leaders

Just one point separate the first five teams in the BOV Challenge League as Birzebbuga St. Peter’s defeated Fgura United 3-0 at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.

In fact, Birzebbuga joined Fgura in fourth place on 12 points, one point behind joint-leaders Melita, Balzan and Pieta’.

Yusuf Sulaiman put Birzebbuga ahead on 39 minutes and Leo Agius doubled the score five minutes later. Yusuf Sulaiman sealed the issue with a third goal on 69 minutes. 

Swieqi United, St. Andrews and Mgarr United join Sirens in sixth place on 10 points.

Swieqi beat Zebbug Rangers 3-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium thanks to a hat-trick by Emmanuel Asante. Asante put Swieqi ahead on 19 minutes and doubled the score twelve minutes in the second half. Daren Falzon converted a penalty to reduce the gap for Zebbug on 86 minutes but four minutes in added time, Asante scored again for Swieqi.

A goal by Ben Gaerty two minutes from time handed St. Andrews a narrow win over Gudja in another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

In another match at the Centenary Stadium, Santa Lucia came back from three goals down to rescue a point in a 3-3 draw with Mgarr United. Cristhyan opened the score after just seven seconds and went on to double the score on 13 minutes. Ronaldo Da Cruz made it 3-0 four minutes in added time before the end of the first half. With nine minutes to go, Jean Carlos scored for Santa Lucia and Sean Gatt reduced the gap further on 86 minutes. Masaaki Takahara notched the equaliser two minutes from time. 

Melita, Balzan and Pieta’ lead the way with 13 points, followed by Birzebbuga and Fgura on 12, Mgarr, Sirens, St. Andrews and Swieqi 10, Santa Lucia 8, Gudja 7, Vittoriosa and Zurrieq 6, Marsa 3, Zebbug 1 and Mtarfa -6.
