After dropping five points in a defeat to Hamrun Spartans and a draw with Sliema Wanderers, Floriana returned to winning ways as they defeated Marsaxlokk 2-1 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round Top 6 at the National Stadium on Sunday.
A win which puts the Greens back on top, one point ahead of Hamrun Spartans.
Floriana managed to take the lead when off an assist by Federicio Varela from the left, Dunstan Vella slotted the ball past goalkeeper Pablo Sanchez.
The Southseasiders equalised on 27 minutes when off a corner from the right, in an attempt to clear the ball into safety, Iago Mendonca headed the ball past goalkeeper Cioletti for an own goal.
However, the Greens regained the lead on 43 minutes when off a swift counter attack, Jake Grech served Charles M’Mombwa on the right and the latter hit home past goalkeeper Sanchez.
Six minutes in the second half, Marsaxlokk challenged the referee’s decision not to award a penalty when Iago Mendonca challenged Dodo inside the area but referee confirmed his decision following FVS review.
Ten minutes from time, Floriana appealed for a penalty for an alleged handling of the ball by Enrico Pepe but referee Ishmael Barbara confirmed his decision not to award the penalty following FVS review.
Five minutes in added time, Marsaxlokk appealed for another penalty but following FVS review, the referee indicated that there was an offside position.
