Meridianbet FA Trophy: Balzan, Birzebbuga and Victoria Hotspurs through to Round of 32

Balzan, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s and Victoria Hotspurs were the last three teams to make it to the Round of 32 of the Meridianbet FA Trophy as the remaining three matches from the Preliminary Round were played on Sunday. 

At the Centenary Stadium, Balzan defeated Qormi 4-1. 

Kyle Azzpoardi put Balzan ahead on 17 minutes and although Ayrton Azzopardi equalised seven minutes in the second half, Jake Engerer made it 2-1 on 78 minutes. Jake Grech extended the lead on 84 minutes with Diego sealing the issue with a fourth goal on 90 minutes. 

Balzan will be facing Birzebbuga St. Peter’s who defeated Nadur Youngsters 4-1 at the Gozo Stadium.

Hubert Vella Genovese handed Birzebbuga the lead on 8 minutes and David Oliveira converted a penalty on 32 minutes to double the score. Diego Rodriguez pulled one back on 61 minutes but Leo Agius restored the two-goall lead on 71 minutes and an own goal extended the lead further two minutes later.

Meanwhile in another match at the Centenary Stadium, Victoria Hotspurs beat Xaghra United 3-1. 

Rondinely handed the Hotspurs the lead on 14 minutes and although Ibrahim Salis equalised on 39 minutes, Kurt Borg made it 2-1 on 80 minutes and two minutes in added time, Wagner converted a penalty for Oliver Spiteri’s side. 

Victoria Hotspurs will be facing Hamrun Spartans in the Round of 32.
