Mgarr United won the Women’s Jubilee Cup after defeating Hibernians 3-2 at the National Stadium on Monday.
Ryan Vella’s side managed to take the lead but the Paolites, led by Martina Borg, equalised early in the second half and late in the game managed to go ahead. However, Mgarr scored twice to win the game and the second major honour in the history of the club.
Mgarr managed to take the lead on 39 minutes when off a corner from the right, the ball was deflected in the direction of Yulya Carella whose overhead kick served Valeria Villegas who headed the ball home from close range.
Three minutes in the second half, Hibernians equalised thanks to Nicole Sciberras whose overhead kick surprised goalkeeper Patricia Ebejer with a lob from outside the area following a short clearance on the right.
The Paolites made it 2-1 on 86 minutes when Sarah Vella Barberi served Kayleigh Chetcuti on the right and the latter beat Ebejer with a rising shot in the top right corner from outside the area.
However, their joy was short-lived as Mgarr equalised two minutes later courtesy of Alejandra Villegas who received a through ball on the right and beat goalkeeper Cachia with a diagonal shot.
Two minutes in aded time, Mgarr made it 3-2 when the Paolites lost ball-possession and Valeria Villegas advanced into the area before slotting past Maya Cachia.
Mgarr were presented with the cup by Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo in the presence of Enemed Executive Chairman Kevin Chircop, Malta FA Vice-President Dr Matthew Paris, General Secretary Dr Maria Azzopardi.
