Sliema come from behind to beat Valletta

Sliema Wanderers came back from a goal down to beat Valletta 2-1 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round Top 6 at the National Stadium on Sunday.

This was the second clash between the two teams in a week after Valletta defeated Sliema 3-1 to claim the Malta FA Jubilee Cup on Monday. The Citizens seemed heading towards another win after taking the lead during the first half but Sliema struck twice late in the game to extend their positive run to six matches. The Blues now share second pace with Hamrun Spartans, four behind leaders Floriana and three ahead of Valletta.

Valletta took the lead on 34 minutes when Yuri intercepted a pass by Murilo Freire and advanced on the left before delivering a cross for Brandon Paiber who chested the ball down and rounded Prsa before slotting past goalkeeper Agu.

Sliema equalised on 78 minutes when off a cross by Jean Borg from the left, Fernandinho hit past goalkeeper Adilson Maringa in the bottom left corner.

The two teams ended in ten men with seven minutes to go as Jefferson was sent off hitting Murilo Freire with the elbow and the Sliema defender was also sent off after picking a second yellow card.

One minute from time, Sliema made it 2-1 thanks to Miguel Baggio whose powerful long-distance effort was not held by Adilson Maringa.
