Hamrun Spartans hit six past Birkirkara

Hamrun Spartans scored five in the second half as they returned to winning ways, defeating Birkirkara 6-1 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round Top 6 at the National Stadium on Sunday.

A win which puts the Spartans four points behind leaders Floriana and three ahead of Valletta and Sliema Wanderers. Birkirkara, on the other hand, remain at the bottom of the Top 6 as they suffered the third defeat in as many matches for a fourth successive defeat. 

Hamrun managed to take the lead on 36 minutes thanks to a great goal by Mouad El Fanis who flicked the ball home in style off a cross from the right by Rafael Compri.

Birkirkara equalised just before the end of the first half when off a free kick by Geoffrey Acheampong from the right, Donovan Makoma beat goalkeeper Henry Bonello with a first time effort.

The Spartans regained the lead five minutes in the second half thanks to Matias Garcia who hit low past Miguel Angel Martinez following a cross by Compri and an assist by Joseph Mbong.

Hamrun made it 3-1 on 66 minutes when off a cross by Rafael Compri, Saliou Thioune headed home from close range.

Five minutes later, Matias Garcia added another, when served on the right by Mbong, beating the Birkirkara goalkeeper with a shot deflected by Neil Micallef.

The Spartans scored the fifth goal on 74 minutes when a shot from outside the area by Thioune was blocked by a defender and Joseph Mbong slotted past Martinez from close range.

N’Dri Koffi scored the sixth goal one minute from time when he concluded a good run on the left flank by rounding a defender and beating the Birkirkara with a shot from inside the area.
