Birzebbuga St. Peter’s, Melita, Pieta’ Hotspurs and Swieqi United were the first four teams to qualify for Round 2 of the BOV Challenge Cup after obtaining wins on Saturday.
At the Centenary Stadium, goals by Taylon Correa on 19 minutes and Paul Lapira on 68 minutes handed Birzebbbuga a 2-0 win over St. Andrews.
Melita defeated Zurrieq 3-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Eric Mensah put Melita ahead on 49 minutes and Jesus Yepez doubled the score on 61 minutes. Gabriel Aquilina reduced the gap for Zurrieq on 68 minutes but Karl Mohnani sealed the issue with a third goal five minute in added time.
At the Centenary Stadium, Pieta’ Hotspurs defeated Sirens 5-0. Sami Abo Assaf put the Hotspurs ahead on 31 minutes and just before the end of the first half, Arthur Stelmach doubled the score. Emmanuel Bio increased the lead on 66 minutes, adding another on 79 minutes before Stelmach also scored his second six minutes from time.
Swieqi United came from behind to beat Balzan 2-1 in another match at the Centenary Stadium Oluwatobiloba Dimeji Awosanya put Balzan ahead thanks to a penalty six minutes from the end of the first half but Zack Barbara converted a penalty on 66 minutes to level matters. Emmanuel Asante notched the winner for Swieqi three minutes in added time.
In Round 2, Swieqi United will be facing Pieta’ Hotspurs, Melita will take on Mgarr United or Mtarfa while Birzebbuga will face Santa Lucia or Marsa.
