Nations League 2024/25 play-offs: Malta bidding to make history

Malta will bid to continue their recent improvement when they go head-to-head with Luxembourg in a 2024/25 Nations League play-off at the end of March.

With a place in League C up for grabs, the current crop of players will have the opportunity to write their names into the record books.

The two sides are scheduled to meet at the National Stadium on Malta on March 26, before facing each other again at the Stade de Luxembourg five days later.

Read on as we assess what to expect in the international break as Malta attempts to keep climbing the FIFA rankings.

Malta bid to keep rolling

Malta are now ranked 161st in the world following a 1-0 victory in Finland and a 3-2 defeat against Poland last November.

The team had previously shown signs of improvement in the Nations League, picking up seven points from four games to secure second place in their group.

They now face Luxembourg, who collected just three points from six outings to finish bottom of their section in League C.

Luxembourg are currently ranked 102nd by FIFA, but Malta will head into the tie believing they can secure promotion.

Malta FA launches family tickets package

The Malta Football Association has launched a special family tickets package that allows them to benefit from significantly reduced prices in the West A stand.

Families can watch the match together for just €60, and the governing body is hoping the incentive helps to attract a sizeable crowd to the game.

Malta’s record attendance was set on December 16, 1984, in a World Cup qualifier against West Germany at the National Stadium.

They were defeated 3-2 on that occasion, which was no mean feat considering the European giants subsequently finished as runners-up at the 1986 World Cup.

Fan groups mobilise ahead of the big game

The South End Core and Ultras Malta fan groups have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering the upcoming clash with Luxembourg.

They are collaborating with the Malta FA on promotional activities ahead of the game and will provide the ‘ultimate fan experience’ at the National Stadium on matchday.

The groups will be located in the Millennium D and Millennium F sections and will be pulling out all the stops to create a vibrant atmosphere inside the stadium.
