BOV Challenge League: Birzebbuga defeat Melita to move back in second place

Birzebbuga St. Peter’s moved back in second place in the BOV Challenge League Top 8 as they came from behind to beat Melita 2-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday.

Gareth Barone put Melita ahead on 31 minutes but Alex Bruno equalised nine minutes in the second half and Randall Vella notched the winner five minutes from time. 

On the other hand, leaders Balzan defeated Pieta’ Hotspurs 3-1 at the Centenary Stadium. James Scicluna put the Hotspurs ahead on 44 minutes. Samir Arab doubled the score on 61 minutes and Oluwatobiloba Dimeji Awosanya converted a penalty on 70 minutes with Arthur Stelmach reducing the gap for the Hotspurs on the 90th.

In the Top 8, Balzan lead the way with 38 points, followed by Birzebbuga on 37, Melita 35, Swieqi 32, Sirens 29, St. Andrews 26, Fgura 25, Pieta’ 24.

In the Bottom 6,  Mgarr United defeated Marsa 2-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Neil Demanuele put Marsa ahead on the half hour but four minutes in the second half, an own goal restored equilibrium with Widom Osaretin Igiebor making it 2-1 seven minutes from time. 

Vittoriosa Stars defeated Zurrieq 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium. Adrian Caruana put Zurrieq ahead on 15 minutes and although Gabriel Aquilina converted a penalty on 34 minutes for Zurrieq, Blessing Brafo handed Zurrieq the three points with a goal just before the end of the first half. 

On the other hand, Santa Lucia beat Gudja United 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium. Haruna Shola Shodija put Gudja ahead on 26 minutes, Adrian Borg equalised two minutes in the second half and Filip Petkovski made it 2-1 for Santa Lucia eight minutes later.  

In the Bottom 6, Mgarr lead with 28 points, followed by Santa Lucia and Gudja on 22, Zurrieq 17, Vittoriosa 16, Marsa and Zebbug 9 and Mtarfa -2.
