The Malta Women’s National Team begin their UEFA European Qualifiers League B campaign with a challenging away fixture against Türkiye at the Pendik Stadium in Istanbul on Tuesday.
The match offers Malta an immediate test at this level, something Head Coach Manuela Tesse acknowledges comes with valuable lessons from the past.
Reflecting on the team’s previous experience in League B, Tesse explained that it provided a clear understanding of the demands required to compete consistently at this standard.
“Our first experience in League B offered valuable insight into the level required,” she noted. “Perhaps both the players and I were not fully prepared and ready at that time, but this experience helped us grow.”
That growth, she believes, has shaped the team’s mentality heading into this new campaign. In the build-up to the fixture, Tesse has placed particular emphasis on confidence and belief within the squad.
“This time round I spoke to the players about increasing their confidence, they need to believe,” she said. “Expectations are always high after winning two back-to-back promotions, but League B is not easy.”
Malta approach the encounter fully aware of the challenge posed by a strong Turkish side on home soil. However, the squad travels with determination and quiet confidence.
Forward Haley Bugeja underlined the team’s mindset ahead of kick-off, stating “We are not afraid. We have worked hard and prepared in the best possible way. Our aim is to bring something home with us.”
The opening fixture will set the tone for Malta’s campaign, with the squad focused on delivering a disciplined and competitive performance in Istanbul. The match, which kicks off at 15:00hrs (CET) on Tuesday, will be live on TVMSport+.
