Yannick Yankam strikes deep in stoppage time to hand Valletta 2-1 win over Sliema

A goal deep in stoppage time enabled Valletta to beat Sliema Wanderers 2-1 in a match from the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday. A win which enabled the Citizens to regain sole leadership.

For the Wanderers, this was the third defeat this season as they have now gone three matches without a win. The Blues now lie eight points behind the leaders.

Sliema were reduced to ten men just before the end of the first half when Steve Pisani was sent off after he was seen hitting an opponent in an off-the-ball situation.

Valletta managed to take the lead on 54 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Andrea Zammit was brought down inside the area by Vlatko Drobarov and from the penalty spot, Zammit made no mistake.

The Wanderers equalised on 74 minutes when following a good run by Adam Magri Overend, he delivered a cross for Anthony Limbombe who headed the ball home past goalkeeper Adilson Maringa.

Brandon Paiber was then sent off for Valletta one minute from time after receiving a second yellow card.

However, nine minutes in added time, Yannick Yankam restored the lead for Valletta as he headed the ball home off a Keyon Ewurum corner.
