St. Andrews moved five points clear on top the BOV Second Division after beating Lija Athletic 2-1 in a direct clash at the top of the table.
Andrew Amato and Anatole Debono scored the goals for Wayne Attard’s side. Keith Darmanin replied for Lija.
The Violets now lead the table with 33 points, five ahead of Lija and Gzira United. The latter however have a game in hand.
In another match, Zurrieq claimed three important points in a 1-0 win over Zebbug Rangers. Daniel Zammit scored the only goal.
On Sunday, Senglea Athletic registered an important 3-1 win over Birzebbuga St. Peter’s thanks to a brace by Timothy Thomas and a goal by Justin Spiteri. Carlos Camenzuli scored the only goal for Birzebbuga.
In another match, Mellieha defeated Rabat Ajax 3-0. Rio Micallef and Reuben Vella scored twice in the first twelve minutes and Wayne Borg St John scored a late goal to seal the issue.
At the Gozo Stadium, Gozo and Gharghur shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, goals by Anthony Portelli for Gozo, Alan Spiteri for Gharghur.
Mellieha are fifth on 17 points, followed by Senglea on 16, Zurrieq and Zebbug on 14, Rabat 13, St. Venera 12, Gozo and Gharghur on six.
